Each season of the year brings new weather and thus new changes to our lifestyles. The warmer temperatures in the Spring and Summer months entice us to get outside more, boating, swimming, gardening, and landscaping. Our kids also want to get out and play more, flying kites, riding bikes, playing ball, and having a great time.

Here at Babcon, the safety of you and your family are a top priority. This is why we thought it would be a great time to share some Spring safety tips.

This Spring when you are replacing shingles, cleaning out gutters, painting the house, or cleaning windows, be sure to keep ladders well away from power lines. Always look up and make sure the area is clear when placing your ladder.
Pay close attention to where your kids play. Climbing trees or flying kites too close to power lines can cause serious injury.
Power tools require A LOT of power. If they are not in use, unplug them. This will keep them from overheating and will also help to keep your work area free from potential tripping hazards.
Always check the power cords of both your tools and the extension cords. Frayed or damaged cords can make the tool dangerous to operate.
Be sure to keep your power tools well away from water. This could include swimming pools, sprinklers, water hoses, or just a quick rain shower.
Many of our projects require digging. Swimming pools, fences, decks, buildings, etc. As we mentioned in an earlier article, ALWAYS call 811 before you dig.

4 Tips to Stay Safe After Flooding

With the recent rainfall here in Kentucky, and more on the way, we thought it would be a good time to remind you of the danger presented by the possible flooding of your home or basement.

Having your home or basement flooded is a very stressful time, but it can also be a very dangerous time if you are not careful. Flash flooding can occur so quickly that we do not have time to prepare our homes properly. Below, we wanted to offer 4 tips to keep you safe during/after a flood.

NEVER go into a basement, recently flooded or still filled with water, until you have contacted the utility company or licensed electrician to disconnect the home from the power grid.
Always have someone with you when entering the home after a flood. DO NOT enter until you are off the power grid, but even then, having someone else there in case of danger or emergency is a must. Bring plenty of lighting and wear appropriate clothing.
After the flooding and recovery, ask an electrician to do a through check of your home’s electrical system. Rusted metals might prevent proper grounding in some cases.
Once you begin recovery of your home/basement, remember, all electrical equipment will be ruined. Do not try to plug in a flooded piece of electrical powered equipment.

10 Tips to Conserve Energy This Winter

With the massive cold front currently moving through Kentucky, and the temperature being in the single digits, we thought we would share these quick 10 tips to conserve energy and maybe save you some money!

Seal Air Leaks that might be sabotaging your heat. This is a simple thing to check. Run your hand around any external door frames and windows and see if you feel any cold air seeping in. Replace faulty door seals or temporarily seal up leaks.
Install a programmable thermostat. By programming your thermostat to automatically lower during the times you are sleeping or away from home, you can conserve a lot of wasted energy.
Change your air filters.
Turn off lights when they are not being used.
Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use, or you are away from the house. A good tip would be to use power strips to plug in multiple appliances to you just have to flip one switch to shut them all off.
Open blinds and curtains during the day to use sunlight to help heat your home.
Close the blinds or curtains at night to help keep cold air out.
Lower your hot water heater temperature to the recommended 120 degrees during winter months.
Use cold water to wash clothes as often as possible.
Replace incandescent bulbs with LEDs, using 75% less energy.

Computers are some of the biggest energy users in offices. Most people will leave their computer on all day and night. Computers are rated for many thousands of power cycles these days. If your computer is not in use, especially overnight, power down.

2. PICK THE RIGHT BULBS

LED Bulbs are 75% more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. They also last about 25 times longer! Make the switch to the right bulbs this year!

Over 14,000 Home Fires Every Year Caused by Clothes Dryers

This is a staggering statistic! According to the National Fire Protection Association, 14,630 home fires occur each year because of clothes dryers. These fires account for 9 deaths, 420 injuries, and $222 million in property damage. The sad fact is, most of these fires could have been prevented with regular cleaning of the dryer lint trap and vent hose.

When dryer lint accumulates, it can cause blockage or reduce the air flow from your dryer. This reduction in air flow will cause you dryer to operate at a higher temperature. This can lead to mechanical failure, or lint catching on fire.

It is recommended that you clean your lint trap every time you get ready to operate your dryer. Also, regular checks of your dryer hose, making sure it is not too long or kinked against the wall, will help prevent lint from building up in the hose. A little time and maintenance could save you a large headache (or potential injury) later.

Winter is here and its time for a few electrical tips to protect you and your family around the home. Did you know that more home fires occur during the winter months than any other time of the year? Its true. Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the united states.

So before plugging in that space heater, make sure you first read the instruction manual.
Always keep space heaters 3 feet away from combustible materials, such as bedding, clothing draperies, and rugs.
Turn off the space heater and unplug it when it is not in use.
And never use space heaters in rooms where children are unsupervised. Children may stick their fingers and other objects through the protective guards causing burns or electrical shock.
If you use a heating pad or electrical blanket, regularly check for cracked or frayed electrical cords.
And never fold or place any items on top of heating pad or electrical blanket. When in use this may result in overheating and firing.
Further, never run electric cords under rugs or behind furniture, and plug only one heating appliance such as a space heater, coffee maker, or microwave into a wall outlet at the same time. Overloading outlets can cause fire.

In closing, please make sure you check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors on a regular basis. Follow these tips and you will keep your family safe this winter and throughout the rest of the year.
